Auckland is one of the largest and most diverse wine regions situated on the North Island between the Tasmanian Sea and the Pacific Ocean. The region well recognised for white and red wines especially for the elegant Chardonnay and the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon based blends, and also very promising Syrah. The region has one of the largest wineries in the country as well as one of the smallest and boutique ones which produce excellent internationally priced wines. The climate is relatively hot and humid, but due to its coastal location and high rainfall, makes grape producing a challenge. It has three sub-regions called Matakana known for its red wines, West Auckland renowned for the Chardonnay and the Merlot and Waiheke Island famous for its Bordeaux blend red wines.
